Retro has certainly proven to be the cool thing in recent years, with carmakers reviving old nameplates with a new twist. Toyota has dug deep in its look to replace the discontinued Avalon full-size sedan, and has returned to its roots, with the 2023 Toyota Crown!

The Crown nameplate was the first model Toyota ever introduced to the United States, over 60 years ago when it debuted in 1958. Now, after 40 years as an exclusively international model, it returns to the American market – and boy, has it changed in that time! Let’s take a look at this unique, non-traditional full-size vehicle that straddles the line between a sedan and an SUV.

Performance Features /

There weren’t any hybrid powertrains in the original Toyopet Crown, but for the 2023 Toyota Crown, that’s all there is – and they’re all all-wheel drive as well!

The base hybrid powertrain pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a 40kW rear electric motor and a pair of front electric motors that offer 88kw. With immediate torque and 236 net system horsepower, it is quick off the line and offers predictable, comfortable cruising speed thanks to the continuously variable transmission (CVT). The estimated fuel efficiency is 42 MPG city and 41 MPG highway, great for a full-sized vehicle!

For folks looking for a more interesting driving experience, the Hybrid MAX powertrain in the Platinum edition is more likely to be their speed. A turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is at the heart of it, paired with electric motors that shift in output as well as a traditional 6-speed automatic transmission. With a more powerful 58.6kW rear motor and 61kW total up front, there is more immediate power to all four wheels, for an estimated 0 to 60 miles per hour time of only 5.7 seconds! This sees a bit of a fuel economy drop, down to 29 MPG city and 32 MPG highway – still good for a sporty full-sized sedan though.

Either engine comes with an appropriately plush ride quality, as well as controlled body movement. The Crown is responsive and has available an Adaptive Variable Suspension system for added performance. Eco, Sport, and Normal drive mode select is offered on the bottom two models, which also feature an EV mode. The Platinum edition features Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport S, Sport S+, and Custom modes.

Style and Technology /

In a world of low, sleek sedans, the 2023 Toyota Crown stands tall. In fact, the height comes close to some crossovers out there – the Crown is a full four inches taller than the Avalon that it replaces. Large wheels and a flowing roofline offer a unique profile and silhouette, while available two-tone paint and bold trim provided make the Crown an eye-catcher.

Offering a spacious interior, adults can sit comfortably for long rides in any seating position. Rear seats offer up to 38.9 inches of leg room, with wide, supportive seats providing 53.1 inches of hip room. The trunk has room for groceries, luggage, and more – up to 15.2 cubic feet, with excellent access!

Toyota isn’t messing around with the infotainment system – every Crown model gets a 12.3-inch touchscreen featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration and SiriusXM with a three-month trial subscription and Bluetooth hands-free phone and streaming. This system features six speakers or can be upgraded to 11 speakers with the JBL premium sound system. Five USB ports – one USB-A and four USB-C – are standard on every model, as is Qi-compatible wireless smartphone charging. Toyota also offers a bevy of Connected Services with every Crown, including trial subscriptions of Wi-Fi Connect, Remote Connect, Service Connect, Drive Connect, and Safety Connect.

Safety /

The paragon of safety in entry-level vehicles, it’s no surprise that Toyota equips the 2023 Toyota Crown with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite. Along with eight airbags throughout the cabin, this suite includes adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, front automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every model, paired with a backup camera featuring dynamic gridlines – a Panoramic View Monitor with a 360-degree view is available. Two great peace-of-mind features, the Toyota Rear Seat Reminder, and the Safe Exit Assist system., are standard on every Crown model!

Trim Levels /

While the 2023 Toyota Crown debuts with only three trim levels, these are incredibly comprehensive, even at the base level!

XLE trim models feature all the standards mentioned above. Fabric-covered front seats are heated, with the passenger getting 8-way power adjustability and the driver getting 8-way power plus lumbar support. A leather-trimmed steering wheel with multimedia controls and a leather-trimmed shift knob add luxury touches inside. Standard dual-zone automatic climate control features a dust and pollen filter. Bi-LED projector low- and high-beam headlights light the way, while the XLE sits on 19-inch multi-spoke machine-finished two-tone alloy wheels. Heated power outside mirrors helps clear snow and ice for good visibility, while puddle lights make night entry safer.

Stepping up to the Limited trim level brings the option of 21-inch 10-spoke dark metallic alloy wheels, while Quad-LED projector low- and high-beam headlights show the way. A panoramic fixed-glass roof with a power sunshade really opens up the cabin, which features leather upholstery. Front seats get ventilation added, while the rear seats and the steering wheel also get heating added. The 11-speaker JBL Premium Audio System including a subwoofer and amplifier is standard. On the safety front, the Panoramic View Monitor is an available option, while front and rear parking assist with automatic braking is standard.

Up at the top of the model range, the Platinum trim with the Hybrid MAX engine sits on 21-inch 10-spoke machined-finished alloy wheels with black accents. Available bi-tone exterior color provides unique paint schemes. Paddle shifters are added to the heated steering wheel to take advantage of the more powerful engine and the additional driving modes mentioned previously. The Panoramic View Monitor with 360-degree Overhead View and Curb View is standard, as is Advanced Park assist.
