The evolution of the minivan over the years has been impressive. Bulky and underpowered people-movers of the past have given way to smart, efficient, high-tech units that often feature the most cutting-edge safety and infotainment systems.

Few models highlight the potential of the modern minivan quite like the 2023 Toyota Sienna. While the Sienna might be entering its 25th year on the market, it continues to evolve and grow and has provided a package that impresses from the base LE model all the way up to the luxurious Platinum trim. It has regularly won Kelley Blue Book’s Best Resale Value for the category, a great indicator of getting the best bang for the buck. Let’s take a look at the latest edition!

Performance Features

The only minivan on the market offered exclusively as a Hybrid, the 2023 Toyota Sienna offers intelligent economy. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine works with a pair of electric motors to create 245 horsepower. It’s not going to break records, but it is reliable and predictable acceleration that can also hop up on the open roadway. Four drive modes – Normal, Eco, EV, and Sport – change response to fit your desired performance levels.

Unlike its only direct competition, the Sienna offers the choice of front-wheel or all-wheel drive, with the latter getting a third electric motor at the rear axle for power. Hybrid competitors offer only front-wheel drive, while all-wheel drive competitors don’t offer hybrid options, giving the Sienna a unique power combination. There is little difference in fuel economy between either drive system – front-wheel-drive versions get 36 MPG across the board, while all-wheel drive versions get 35 MPG city and 36 MPG highway.

Style and Technology

Minivans are fairly limited when it comes to design, while trading form for function in most cases. The 2023 Toyota Sienna offers a clean, slightly sporty take on this, meshing the SUV and car design language of Toyota. It’s a stylish departure from the norm, and you can even change things up with the separate trims – go for the sporty XSE and 25th Anniversary, or the luxury-twinged Limited and Platinum.

With seating for 7 or 8 passengers depending on the trim, the Sienna is spacious and functional. Even the rear seats offer 38.7 inches of legroom and 37.4 inches of headroom, plenty of space for even the taller adults to be comfortable for a long trip. Even with all of the seats in place, the Sienna offers 33.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, plenty for luggage and groceries. When you need to haul, you can expand the room up to a maximum of 101 cubic feet behind the first row of seats.

A 9-inch touchscreen is at the heart of the infotainment system, featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration across all models along with six speakers, SiriusXM with a three-month trial subscription, Bluetooth hands-free phone and streaming, Amazon Alexa compatibility, a USB media port, and six USB charge ports. That’s just the base standard – it can be upgraded to eight speakers, eight speakers plus navigation, or a top-of-the-line 12-speaker JBL premium audio system!

Toyota Safety Sense has been the standard for safety across the automotive world, and the 2023 Toyota Sienna features the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 suite of driver assistance technology. This suite includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Automatic High Beams, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and Road Sign Assist all standard, on every Sienna. That’s on top of ten airbags and a standard rearview camera complimented by blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. This is one of the big contributors to the 5-Star rating the Sienna has earned from the NHTSA.

Trim Levels

The addition of the anniversary trim level brings the 2023 Toyota Sienna to seven distinct trims, all available in front- or all-wheel drive!

Starting at the base LE level means you get plenty of standard features, including everything mentioned above. Rear-seat privacy glass keeps prying eyes out, while a power tilt/slide moonroof is optional – it’s standard on all other trims. Fabric-trimmed seating includes an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and three-zone automatic climate control offers individual settings for the driver, front passenger, and rear-seat passengers with separate controls in the rear. Remote keyless entry with push button start makes it easy to deal with corralling passengers, pets, cargo, and more when getting on the road! Wireless device charging for Qi-compatible phones is also available.

XLE trim models come with the option of a bench or captain’s chairs for the middle row. Front seats are covered in SofTex trim, and are heated – the driver’s seat adds a power lumbar adjustment while the passenger gets 4-way power adjustability. XLE and above get four-zone automatic climate control for even better customization and comfort throughout the cabin. Driver Easy Speak is available for easy communication with your passengers. The audio system is upgraded to eight speakers, and a 1080p entertainment center with an 11.6-inch display is optional. The Smart Key System with illuminated entry makes it even easier to get in, and works on every door – the sliding doors are kick-activated hands-free and the rear liftgate is powered, for even greater ease of entry! A hands-free power liftgate is optional, while outside mirrors are heated for clearing off snow and ice in cold weather.

On the XSE trim, the exterior is dressed up with a black metallic sport mesh front grille, sport mesh rear lower bumper, black side rocker panels, and 20-inch dark wheels. Black exterior mirrors replace the color-keyed versions. Inside, the first and second rows get special SofTek sport trim upholstery, and the center console gets special satin-grain accents. Navigation is added as standard, with the JBL audio system as an option.

A unique choice, the outdoor-oriented Woodland trim level features a 0.6-inch increase in ground clearance. While many of the comforts match the XSE trim, you get flannel-trimmed upholstery instead of SofTex, as well as some other styling touches. Thick rubber floor mats are ready to deal with dirt and muck, while a tow hitch and power inverter make the Woodland activity-ready for the great outdoors.

New and exclusive to the 2023 model year, the 25th Anniversary Edition takes the XSE and adds some unique touches inside and out. The mirrors add puddle lighting and memory features. 18-inch metallic wheels are standard, as are black roof rails. Special 25th Anniversary badging is used across the exterior and throughout the interior as well, including on the special floor mats. The front seats are leather trimmed with unique silver stitching, and are heated and ventilated – the driver’s seat also has a memory function. The second-row captain’s chairs are also leather-trimmed.

The Limited trim level offers impressive features, starting from the exterior with premium LED taillights and brake lights, 18-inch bright wheels, and a dark gray metallic grille. The outside mirrors are now color-keyed, the roof rails are chrome and the rear lower bumper is black with a chrome accent. Chrome-accented logos dress up the exterior another notch. Inside, the front seats are leather-trimmed, with heating and ventilation. The center console gets wood-grain-style accents, with an illuminated storage compartment. The premium JBL sound system is standard on this trim level, as is Qi-compatible wireless smartphone charging.

At the top of the model range, the Platinum trim gets signature Bi-LED projector headlights and LED-strip Daytime Running Lights. The exterior mirrors get Panoramic View Monitor features on top of the memory feature and puddle lights. The windshield wipers are rain-sensing. 20-inch metallic wheels add a good luxury look to the exterior. Inside, the second-row captain’s chairs are also leather-trimmed, with fold-out ottomans and heating. The leather-trimmed power-tile steering wheel is also heated. On the tech side, the driver gets a 10-inch color Head-Up Display with a speedometer and navigation. A Panoramic View Monitor with 360-degree Overhead View is standard.
